Trouble thinking? Better see the dentist

Good oral care such as regular brushing, flossing and trips to the dentist, may help aging adults keep their thinking skills intact, according to a U.S. study.
Research has already established an association between poor oral health and heart disease, stroke and diabetes, as well as Alzheimer’s disease.
But researchers from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York found gum disease could also influence brain function through several mechanisms, such as causing inflammation throughout the body, a risk factor for loss of mental function.
The study based on adults aged 60 and older found those with the highest levels of the gum disease-causing pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis were three times more likely to have trouble recalling a three-word sequence after a period of time.
The study, led by Dr. James Noble, also found that adults with the highest levels of this pathogen were two times more likely to fail three-digit reverse subtraction tests.
“Despite the association of periodontitis with stroke and shared risk factors between stroke and dementia, to our knowledge, no epidemiological studies have investigated periodontitis relative to cognition,” the researchers wrote in their study.
“Although results presented here are preliminary and inconclusive, a growing body of evidence supports exploration of a possible association between poor oral health and incident dementia.”
The study, reported in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, was based on more than 2,350 men and women who were tested for periodontitis and completed numerous thinking skills tests as part of a national survey.
Overall 5.7 percent of the adults had trouble completing certain memory tasks, 6.5 percent had impaired delayed recall, and 22.1 percent had trouble with serial subtractions.
But those with the levels of the pathogen were nearly three times more likely to struggle with the verbal memory tests, and twice as likely to fail on both delayed verbal recall and subtraction tests.
“Although our results are preliminary, they suggest that further exploration of relationships between oral health and cognition is warranted,” they concluded.

Mitxel.

GABON ZORIONTSUAK DENONTZAT!

EGUBERRI jaiak iritsi zaizkigu. Urtero bezala, zorabiozko jaigiro batean murgilduko zaigu gizarte osoa egun hauetan. Jesusen jarraitzaileok ere, nola ez, jai eta festa egingo dugu, baina zentzuz. Guk badakigu Eguberri jaien arrazoi nagusia orain dela bi mila urteko gertakari bat dela: Jesucristo Belenen jaiotzea.
Jesusen jaiotza, hain zuzen, adiskidetasun eta bakearen iturri bezala ematen zaigu, Jainkoarekin, senideekin, lagunekin eta bihotzean eramaten ditugun pertsonen oroipenarekin bakean bizi gaitezen.

Espero dezagun maitasunak eta adiskidetasunak agintzea egun hauetan eta hemendik aurrera, ezagun eta ezezagunen artean. Esan bezala, “Gabon zoriontsuak denontzat!”.

Jesus is Born

Now it’s Luke’s turn to take us to the humble manger where Our Saviour was born.

1 Now it happened that at this time Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be made of the whole inhabited world.
2 This census — the first — took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria,
3 and everyone went to be registered, each to his own town.
4 So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee for Judaea, to David’s town called Bethlehem, since he was of David’s House and line,
5 in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
6 Now it happened that, while they were there, the time came for her to have her child,
7 and she gave birth to a son, her first-born. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the living-space.
8 In the countryside close by there were shepherds out in the fields keeping guard over their sheep during the watches of the night.
9 An angel of the Lord stood over them and the glory of the Lord shone round them. They were terrified,
10 but the angel said, ‘Do not be afraid. Look, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by the whole people.
11 Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
12 And here is a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.’
13 And all at once with the angel there was a great throng of the hosts of heaven, praising God with the words:
14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace for those he favours.
15 Now it happened that when the angels had gone from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go to Bethlehem and see this event which the Lord has made known to us.’
16 So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.
17 When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him,
18 and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them.
19 As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as they had been told.

…And we shouldn’t do less on that account.
